Substance with Style and Type with Elegance

Bassanova is a young kennel in the Boxer scene, but my association with Boxers and the world of dog showing goes waaaayyyyyyy further back than that. My very first Boxer puppy was a gift I bought for myself with my own pocket money in 1989. At 12 years old I still had an intense fear of the dark, and I battled with insomnia. My fathers friend, who was a Doctor of Psychology recommended I get a dog to sleep in my room to help me get over this fear. Thankfully, he was a Boxer fan and a fortuitous recommendation was made. So my first Boxer came to be. “Dusty“ was the first Boxer my father took me to see. I was 12 years old.

By the time I hit my early 20s and had moved out of the house, I was in a position to be able to start taking things a little more seriously. Not having the space for a Boxer at the time, I decided a Boston Terrier was the way to go, and not long after my kennel “Togra Boston Terriers“ was established. While Togra Bostons was an incredibly successful venture I still had that desire to follow my dream and have my own Boxer Kennel.

During this specific period I was fortunate enough to be able to brush up on my handling skills and had a great deal of fun handling Boston Terriers, Bulldogs, German Shepherds, and of course a few Boxers. As a handler of Boxers, I was fortunate enough to handle dogs from some of South Africa's top kennels of the time with some really impressive Best in Specialty Show wins along the way. Two kennels laid the foundation for Bassanova.

Through friendships, I was really fortunate to understand the importance of why specific breeds have specific traits and why that is important. Discussions with local and international breeders got me thinking about issues pertaining to type and style, which, in the Boxer, is particularly important considering the vast difference in styles from the various continents. I found only a handful of people could really look past styles and really determine a Boxer (or Boston for that matter) of quality. This was, and remains, a skill I wish to perfect.

After owning a number of Boxers, I eventually got the Boxer of quality I desired. Layla entered our lives in 2018 and formed the basis of our very young kennel. She is not only a female of exceptional quality and confirmation, but also has a clear health record…what a bonus! In 2019 I was able to put the years of studying genetics and breeding practices that I had practiced with the Bostons, and our first litter arrived. This was a turning point for me as it was the very first time I would be able to handle a Boxer I had bred myself. “Sansa“ has not disappointed and, at just 11 months old, already boasts an impressive record of various Group wins, CCs and a Best in Specialty Show win.

Some special titles earned include:
