Indy, along with his “S” littermates, was a seasoned traveller – one could say adventurer – much like the character he was named after, even before he was born, having flown across continents from Eastern Europe to Cape Town.
He was born the day after the South African Youth Day holiday to Ch. Izzy vom Quercus Wald of Shiluan. His sire, Nick von der Maxirott, is well-known in Europe and whose progeny have scooped many titles and awards. His parents come from major championship-winning lines on both sides of the family. Take a look at his pedigree.
As a puppy, Indy (aka Mr Brown - his puppy collar colour) was very fond of his food and was always up for an adventure. The same stays true today. On the first photo session with the puppies, I was perched on a bucket and he left his litter-mates and came to sit beside me. “That's the one, he has chosen you” said my husband. I dismissed that as nonsense at the time, but the pup with the brown collar stuck in my mind. Many trips out to the farm, including an extended stay to puppy sit, and my decision was made. Lucky me, I got to take him home to join the family of two cats and an aging Bull Terrier.
Puppy training was a blast. He won his first award, Puppy Class at a “Comic Relief” fun show. Then came the serious stuff. At the Cape championship shows in February 2016, we had mixed results but also won Best Rottweiler Puppy, what a thrill!
2016 was a good year with some nice wins, but 2017 was exceptional for Indy. In April 2017, he competed in the South African National Grand Victor Show held at the Cape Rottweiler Club, judged by Herr Edgar Hellmann (ADRK). Indy was awarded the Junior Grand Victor title (age related), and he also scooped RCC over 32 other males from across the country. And then it got better! Indy won Best in Specialty Show at the Western Province Rottweiler Club Show in September, competing against 60 plus other Rottweilers. Neil Perkins (ZA) was the judge. The following day he gained his BA, and at the October shows, finished his South African championship. Later that year he added a CGC Bronze qualification. What a ride!
Indy has won many BOBs, Group placings and, in Specialist Shows, has gained multiple V ratings, the majority V1 placings. I couldn't wish for more! He has also qualified for Western Cape Top Dog for the second year running with very limited showing in 2019.
Indy loves nothing better than having a chance to stretch his legs around the ring. We have learnt together, and I sometimes feel I don't do him justice but we win some and lose some, but we are both learning all the time.
At home, he is a character of note, he talks a lot - something that Rotties do - watches cartoons and wildlife programmes on the television, is completely ball obsessed, plays rough and tumble with his Bull Terrier pal, loves tummy rubs, and patrols the garden like a boss.
Since those first steps, Indy has never ceased to amaze me with his fantastic, fun personality. He loves people and animals in equal measure, and happily greets everyone with a wagging tail and sometimes with a little too much enthusiasm. Indy is just a one in a million dog.
