Piet Olivier (Glenroy Labrador Retrievers & Dachshunds) fell ill with the incapacitating Guillain-Barré Syndrome. With increasing paralysis, Pietie had to spend several months in hospital and a nursing home. Recovery has been slow but it was wonderful seeing him visiting the October shows.

In August, a BBC documentary called "Pedigree Dogs Exposed" made the rounds on TV programmes and YouTube. The documentary claimed that decades of in-breeding has caused genetic deformities and life-threatening illnesses and that dogs suffering from these genetic disorders continue to compete and win at dog shows. On the strength of this exposé, the BBC demanded that 14 'at risk' breeds (including inter alia, Chow Chows, Pekingese, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Cavaliers, Boxers, Bulldogs) be excluded from competition at Crufts in 2009. The Kennel Club (UK) refused to comply with this "unreasonable demand". As a result, there will be no television coverage of the March 2009 show, to the dismay of millions of viewers.

And then it was time for Goldfields, which hosts the annual Dog of the Year Competition for dogs and bitches with the most number of Best of Breed awards gained during the previous year. A panel of four judges selected the following winners:

On the KUSA administration front, Fedco's proposal to amend to the KUSA Constitution to reduce the DOGSPC representation on Fedco from two to one (a measure to allow proportional representation in an area that comprises 40% of affiliated clubs, shows and potential income in South Africa) created an unprecedented outcry. Are the peasants are revolting????? A successful petition was launched to overturn this ruling, leading to the Constitution maintaining the status quo.

Mr Greg Eva's term of KUSA Presidency was due to expire at the end of 2008 and he indicated his willingness to stand for a further four-year term of office. Unexpectedly, a challenger came to light in the form of David Thompson. And thus began a Presidential Campaign to emulate, although with not quite the same grandeur, the USA Presidentital Campaign. The KUSA membership was treated to websites, roadshows, private campaigning, forums, interviews, slogans, buttons, emails, songs and a vibe the likes of which has not been seen in this organisation! Needless to say, supporters allowed emotions to boil over at times. With a majority of nine club votes, Greg Eva was re-elected to President of KUSA.

The German Shepherd Dog Club Western Cape qualified to hold championship shows at a successful qualifying show on 7 September and, on 20 September, the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of Free State held a qualifying show in Bloemfontein.

NOVEMBER 2008
Tail docking remained a hot issue throughout the year together with fears and accusations of the practice being chased underground. The decision of the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) to prohibit practicing veterinarians from docking tails from 1 June received wide publicity and the impression was created that the rule was a fait accompli. However, "A thorough search of the government gazettes since the 2nd June, 2006 resolution taken by the SAVC to declare tail docking an unethical procedure for veterinarians has revealed no Ministerial notice confirming the approval of this resolution and the KUSA's legal advice confirms that Ministerial approval is required in terms of Section 30 of the Veterinary and Para-veterinary Professionals Act, 1982. KUSA's point of view is that humane veterinary procedures must remain available to all dog owners at all times for any treatment the owner or breeder deems necessary and the KUSA supports the right of choice for the individual, be it breeder, dog owner or practicing veterinarian." (KUSA Statement - November 2008)

With the championship show season at an end, the year began to wind down with a series of provincial invitational competitions and special shows. Two highly successful and enjoyable qualifying shows were held in November: the Junior KC (organised almost exclusively by the junior dog fraternity) on 2 November, and the Grand Central Utility Breeds Club on the 8th.

In the Cape, the Western Cape Top Dog Invitational was held as an evening event followed by a sumptious dinner and copious bottles of Cape wine! Judged by Ms C. Immelman (SA), the winners were:

DECEMBER 2008

The American Kennel Club (AKC), the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) and Eukanuba teamed together to stage the 2nd Eukanuba World Challenge in Long Beach California, USA. The dog selected by the KUSA for this event was the KUSA National Dog, KUSA Nat Dog '08 Ch. Agha Djari's Question of Honour at Accolades (Quadey), the top-winning Afghan Hound owned by Ria Wessels. Prior to the competition, Quadey had the opportunity to compete in a few local shows in the US, where he earned BOB, BOS and several points towards his US championship. Hearty congratulations to Jane and Ria!

The winner of the Eukanuba / FCI World Challenge 2008 was a German Saluki bitch owned by Hintzenberg-Freisleben, Ch. Dakira Sawahin.

The Christmas Charity Show has become an institution at Christmastime in Gauteng. Organised by Carol and Joe Field, the event has grown from humble beginnings to an immensely popular event that raises huge amounts of money for charity. Aside from breed class judging that is somewhat different from the norm, a popular highlight is the fancy dress competition, usually judged by a local celebrity.

After a couple of weeks of daily voting, the fiercely-contested winners of the SHOWDOGS Shows of 2008 were announced:

ALL BREEDS SHOW OF THE YEAR 2008: Pretoria Kennel Club
RUNNER-UP: Eastern Districts Kennel Club
SHOW WEEKEND OF THE YEAR 2008: Transvaal Midlands and Witwatersrand Kennel Clubs (for the second consecutive year)
RUNNER-UP: Durban & Districts & Pietermaritzburg Kennel Clubs
GROUP SHOW OF THE YEAR 2008: Pretoria Toy Dog Club
RUNNER-UP: Victory Toy Dog Club
SPECIALTY OF THE YEAR 2008: Australian Shepherd Club of Gauteng
RUNNER-UP: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club of the Rand

To ring the changes in deciding the winners of this competition in future, 2009 will see a new system, where clubs will need to work towards earning points and not rely exclusively on myriad voters....... hmmmm!

Amidst much speculation and anticipation, the winners of the Eukanuba / SHOWDOGS Puppy Points System were announced following the usual count-down from Top 100 down to Top 10.

PUPPY OF THE YEAR 2008: Bull Terrier - Bukavi Huye (Mattheys)
FIRST RUNNER-UP: Shih Tzu - Dunstars Heart of Face (Aucamp)
SECOND RUNNER-UP: Italian Greyhound - Ravilais Megastar Moth (Allison)

Congratulations!

Bukavi Huye

With adult dogs and puppies receiving due recognition in respective points systems, SHOWDOGS felt that veterans were being sidelined, so the Hills / SHOWDOGS Veteran Points System was launched. It is hoped that this may encourage exhibitors to enter their veterans and that clubs will offer a Veteran Stake at their shows. Following a similar set of rules to the Puppy Points, the count-down led to the announcement of the winners.

VETERAN OF THE YEAR 2008: Standard Poodle - Ch. LeMeulleur Even Money at Dotcom (van Niekerk)
FIRST RUNNER-UP: Afghan Hound - Ch. Xciting Xclusive Touch (Wessels)
SECOND RUNNER-UP: Smooth-coat Chihuahua - Ch. & Ch. (UK) Salinacruz Blue D'zire (Liebenberg)

Congratulations!

Ch. LeMeulleur Even Money at Dotcom

The dog community lost way too many well-loved people again this year. They were all important in their particular ways and they all played a vital role in the nurturing of our sport and interest. Their passion for dogs made them special people and their expertise will be missed by many. SHOWDOGS expresses warmest condolences to the friends and family of all these wonderful people with the wish that the good memories will soon replace the pain of losing a loved one. We shall remember them.....
