the year that was - 2010... chapter 1

JANUARY 2010

January brought the start of the magical year the country had been awaiting for so long - 2010: The Soccer World Cup. Excitement levels reached fever-pitch and the dreaded vuvuzela attached it's onerous sound to ones' eardrums long into July, after which the instrument made the transition from festive fog-horn to a rowdy bull-horn to call rolling strike action that followed hard on the heels of the highly-successful world festival. During the month of World Cup madness, it became obvious that dog events could and would be affected, so many events were put on hold and some, such as the Oudtshoorn shows, were postponed to later dates. A vibrant time for our country, indeed!

Once again, SHOWDOGS webstats almost doubled on the previous year's unique visits. Huge thanks to our advertisers and wonderful supporters, at home and abroad. We are totally committed to bringing you show-related news and information as we celebrate our beautiful dogs and what they mean to us. We look forward to another vibrant year - here's to 2011, and all the wonderful success you wish for.

For most dog-folk, recovery from the recession has been slow, and many found their campaign trails seriously curtailed. For the second consecutive year, clubs around the country recorded worrying reductions in entry numbers, so the need to attract exhibitors by offering top quality shows has become a major factor. Whatever the reason for exhibitors staying away, it is the responsibility of all of us, collectively and individually, to encourage newcomers to our sport - and we can only do this by packing away personal agendas and striving to ensure that the hobby is largely a pleasant experience with every role player working for the greater good.

Several newly-formed clubs held successful qualifying shows and are now qualified to present championship shows: Australian Shepherd Club of the Eastern Cape, American Staffordshire Terrier Club of Gauteng and KZN Junior KC, while SA Bull Terrier Club successfully requalified for a championship show in 2011.

During 2010, the following newly-qualified clubs held their first championshiop shows: Australian Shepherd Club of the Western Cape and Klun French Bulldog Club.

SHOWDOGS wishes a long and successful future for each of these new clubs.

Several new breeds made their appearance in the South African show rings this year, some of which were imported as newcomers to the breed register, some reintroduced after many years, and some local breeding returning to the ring after a long absence from the ring. These included Affenpinscher, Azawakh, Bedlington Terrier,Cane Corso, Dogue de Bordeaux, Foxhound, Italian Spinone, Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, Sealyham Terrier, Skye Terrier.

SHOWDOGS looks forward to these breeds making their mark at shows in SA.

During 2009, SHOWDOGS introduced the SHOWDOGS Breed Leaderboard, a point system that recognises achievement at breed level - often considered the most important celebration of success. After all, many specimens are outstanding representatives of their breed, but don't necessarily find their way to a group placing. The rating system was received with great enthusiasm and it wasn't long after the first scores became known that exhibitors began vying for points that would put their dogs in the lead. The final results of the Leaderboard were announced at the end of 2009 and, while the emphasis in this point-scoring system is on achievement at breed level only in terms of the number of dogs beaten, it is significant to recognise the achievement of Ronel Stone's Golden Retriever, CH. BARLEYWOOD BACHELOR BOY, who earned 501 points during 2009.

APRIL 2010
The month started with an announcement that Goldfields Showgrounds were to undergo major disruptons and alterations:

EXTENSIVE ALTERATIONS TO GOLDFIELDS SHOWGROUNDS

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has announced plans for extensive alterations to the Goldfields Showgrounds, estimated to begin in July 2010 with a possible operational period of 18 months.

1. The Lower Field is to be completely levelled and regrassed. With effect from 1 July 2010 until 1 December 2011, no vehicles, including trailers, will be permitted on the area marked in red on the map below. Parking will be restricted to the areas marked yellow - to be shared, as usual, with church parking on Sundays, so show-goers are advised to arrive early to secure suitable parking. Additional parking bays will be provided along one side of Boeing Road and on the left side of the main entrance.

2. All alien trees will be removed and replaced with new indigenous trees. This process has already begun, with the planting of young trees on the perimeter of the show area on the Lower Field. These new trees are estimated to provide sufficient shade within approximately 15 - 20 years. All other established trees on the whole showgrounds will be removed, except the only indigenous tree on the property (marked in a green circle), the forty-year old Africanis Apriloneia.

3. The access road from the Upper Field to the Lower Field will be tarred. During operations, therefore, this road will be restricted to pedestrian traffic only - no vehicles or trailers.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality and Goldfields Showgrounds Maintenance Committee regret the inconvenience caused by these alterations and request your co-operation.

SHOWDOGS visitors have come to expect a bit of leg-pulling on April 1, and this year's sneaky story conjured images of show-going exhibitors at Goldfields Showgrounds parking in Boeing Rd and lugging dogs and show equipment down to the Lower Field to spend the day under a sapling Africanis Apriloneia tree! (Hello....!!??) A few indignant individuals are still wiping the egg off their faces after some serious over-reacting, but most thoroughly enjoyed a bit of the lighter side of life, expressing relief that it ain't gonna happen!

The popular Port Elizabeth shows drew the usual crowd of campers on the grounds - a wonderfully social time can always be guaranteed.

CAVEAT EMPTOR! As responsible breeders, exhibitors, and owners of purebred dogs, it is important to be on the alert for cleverly-disguised puppy brokering 'services' that crop up from time to time. In April, a new website suddenly appeared, which was being advertised via unsolicited emails, that openly stated "We source our puppies and kittens from only the best breeders in South Africa and ship worldwide." They also claimed to "handle all paperwork, no hassle for the buyer" including the application for export pedigrees. Their fee included "KUSA Registration Certificate, first standard vaccinations required in South Africa, microchip, pre-release vetting, and Basic Health Guarantee." They claim "Our puppies are registered by the Kennel Union of South Africa, where most breeds register their litters." While charlatans such as these frequently pop up to catch the unwary, it is our responsibility to be aware of their existence and warn potentital puppy buyers against falling into such potentially-devastating and heart-breaking traps.

The Australian Shepherd, CH. ROSEMERE I'M A FIREFLY FOR STAVROS journeyed to the USA to compete at the USASA 2010 Nationals from 23 to 30 April 2010 in Missouri, handled by Lorette Gray.

PEOPLE NEWS - FIRST SEMESTER

ILL HEALTH

~ Rose-Marie Cabion suffered ill health over the Christmas period and was admitted to hospital in early January. She underwent colon surgery and spent some time in ICU, followed by recuperation in the hospital and at home. Following further surgery in May, Rose-Marie has returned to good health.

~ Joy McFarlane, SHOWDOGS Webmaster, was diagnosed with cancer just before Christmas 2009 and underwent several surgeries during January and March. Unfortunately, the extended hospital stays caused some disruption to SHOWDOGS services, but Joy has returned to a clean slate of health.

~ Juliette Duthie underwent serious surgery and extended treatment following ill health and continues to return to good health.

~ Adrian Battey suffered a heart attack and spent some time in ICU at the Glynwood hospital in April. He underwent quadruple bypass surgery and has made a safe recovery.

~ Anne Manduell-Carkeek was attacked in her home in early May, strangled, and left for dead. She survived the brutal attack but for a long time experienced great difficulty speaking.

~ Rex Koning underwent bypass surgery during May, but his recovery was slow and difficult.

~ Pat de Coning endured a double knee replacement during May. Her recovery was fairly swift and she reports much improvement in mobility.

MISFORTUNE

~ Lore Daiber of the Jacaranda  Miniature Long-haired Dachshunds had her home completely devastated by a fire. She, her husband, and the dogs were saved and taken care of, but there was very little to be salvaged. Members of the South African Dachshund Club were kindly able to make a contribution to recover from their hardship.

~ Several of Jenny Gray's dogs were poisoned in February. Her GSD sadly died, and 6 Australian Shepherds required hospitalisation (including Ripley and Prada, and Rage).

~ On Saturday, 13 March, two show quality Bulldog puppies were stolen from the property of Arthur Seef. It is not known if the puppies were recovered.

NEW ARRIVALS

~ Tammy Gilmour and Brett Buckley-Fawcett welcomed a son to the world, Colby, born on 13 May. Give it a couple of years, and we'll be seeing a new child handler in the ring...

OBITUARIES

~ Eric Hill, father of Sue Melvin, passed away during the early hours of Wednesday morning 6 January after a short illness.

~ Russell Shelver (Hellava Boston Terriers) passed away on 11 February after a bravely-fought battle with cancer.

~ Ken Hogg underwent surgery shortly before Christmas, but there were complications so he was placed into an induced coma to speed up recovery. Sadly, he deteriorated beyond recovery and passed away peacefully on Saturday 13 February. Ken was a respected All-breeds Judge and Club Administrator for many years.

~ Hentie Victor, beloved husband of Annalette (Letanna Cavaliers) passed away on Saturday 13 February after a bravely-fought struggle against cancer.

~ Ron Blair, husband of Carolyn (Afghan Hounds), passed away on 19 March. Ron had been in hospital for about two weeks following a serious heart operation. He was making slow but good progress, but later took a turn for the worse.

~ Sharon Bubb (Bubbles Bulldogs) was admitted to hospital during April for emergency surgery but she sadly succumbed to septicaemia a few days later.

~ Wayne Streak lost his sister tragically.

~ Gerry Hall passed away on the morning of 11 May after having suffered from cancer for the last year. He was a committee member of the Hottentots Holland KC for many years. Gerry will especially be remembered for his interest in the Aptitude Testing of dogs since 1989, and his love for Giant Schnauzers.

~ Janice Hoberman (Vice-chairman of Kennel Association) lost her battle with cancer at the end of June. Janice was an active member of the Kennel Association and will be missed by all who knew her for her dedication and loyalty to the club.

Sincerest condolences to family and friends as you remember your loved ones.
